Introduction for the Asian Heart House
The most important task ahead for Japan in the 21st Century is to make
advances in respect to politics, the economy, scientific research and
culture. Medicine is also no exception.
The Heart House Project we have been proposing is patterned after that
of the American College of Cardiology(ACC, in Bethesda, on the outskirts
of Washington, DC, in America, since 1986. The Asian Heart House will
serve not only physicians, but also nurses, paramedics, and the general
publics in neighboring Asian countries, by providing international level
education and information exchange regarding heart and its related diseases.
The necessity of establishing the Asian Heart House was first discussed
at the Scientific Council of Japan 7 years ago. As a primary step of this
project it was decided to locate an office of the Asian Heart House in
the autumn of 2001, in the Yokohama International Cooperation Center Building,
which is located in Yokohama.
The principal belief of the Asian Heart House is based on the concept
that the goal of medical care in the 21st Century should be health medicine.
Physicians and medical staff can become more humane (H) if they receive
a useful and effective education (E). This will help to advance (A) and
improve international medical care. We need to use our human resources
(R) and give them sufficient training (T).
We need to maintain our health (H) and improve our quality of life through
knowledge of our poor life styles. We also need to know about ways of
prevention. We should have more awareness that the heart, brain and kidneys
are the three major organs (O) of the human body. In order to maintain
this body unit (U), we need to improve our spirit (S) through education
(E). Based on the above concept, the Asian Heart House will develop ways
to prevent heart and habitual diseases all over the world, by working
closely together with Heart House (ACC) and European Heart House (European
Society of Cardiology).
The JECCS (Japanese Educational Clinical Cardiology Society) already
opened its learning center in Osaka, October 1998. This center held several
training courses for foreign-physicians, those who were studying at the
National Cardiovascular Disease Center at Osaka, during the past two years.
This center already began its activities as the "Asian Heart House
in Osaka", and it provides medical information and services, not
only for Japanese but also for foreigners through its home page of JECCS.
More that 20,000 people have accessed in the last two years. Furthermore,
new educational activities will be introduced through the inter net in
the near future.
It is most fitting that here at the dawn of the new century is felt the
strong heart beat of the life which will be the Asian Heart House, a totally
new kind of institution, and one which we are sure will grow into a vast
complex devoted to the public and welfare. Please join us a s a member
of the Asian Heart House!
We most sincerely request your kind support and cooperation for these
international activities.
